Terms & Data Disclaimer
Information about PowerOut, the data we collect and display, and the limitations you should be aware of when using the service.
1. About PowerOut
PowerOut is an independent website providing information about electricity network outages across Great Britain.
The service collects information from publicly available sources operated by electricity distribution network operators (DNOs) and presents that information in a single interface.
PowerOut is not affiliated with, operated by, or endorsed by any electricity distribution network operator, electricity supplier or other utility company unless explicitly stated.
The purpose of PowerOut is to make publicly available outage information easier to find, understand and explore.
2. Outage Information
PowerOut collects outage information from third-party sources and processes that information before displaying it on the website.
Information displayed by PowerOut may be:
- Delayed
- Incomplete
- Temporarily unavailable
- Inaccurate
- Changed after it has been collected
- Unavailable because a third-party data source is unavailable
There may also be circumstances where an outage is affecting an area but has not yet appeared in the information collected by PowerOut.
3. Data Freshness
PowerOut periodically retrieves information from its data sources. The service is designed to collect information regularly, but this does not mean that the information displayed represents the exact current state of the electricity network.
An outage may have started since the last PowerOut update, or an outage may have been resolved or changed without that change yet being reflected on PowerOut.
Any timestamp displayed by PowerOut should therefore be considered an indication of when information was received or recorded by PowerOut and not a guarantee that the information remains current.
4. Check Your Electricity Network Operator
PowerOut should not be used as the sole source of information about an electricity outage.
If you are experiencing a power cut, we recommend checking directly with your local electricity network operator.
Electricity distribution network operators are responsible for the local electricity distribution network and for responding to power cuts in the areas they serve. Ofgem advises consumers to report power cuts directly to their network operator.
For information about what to do during a power cut, please consult your electricity network operator or the relevant official guidance.
5. No Safety-Critical Reliance
Information provided by PowerOut should not be used as the sole basis for decisions involving safety, emergency response, medical requirements, critical infrastructure or other situations where inaccurate or delayed information could result in harm or loss.
Always verify important information with the relevant electricity network operator or emergency service.
6. Historical Data
PowerOut may retain historical outage information in order to provide historical searches, statistics, charts and other features.
Historical information displayed by PowerOut is an independent record compiled from information collected by the service.
It should not be considered the definitive historical record maintained by an electricity network operator.
Information supplied by third-party sources may subsequently be corrected, amended or removed. PowerOut may also process and normalise information when storing it.
7. Data Sources
PowerOut obtains outage information from publicly available third-party sources, including electricity distribution network operators.
The original information remains the responsibility of the organisation that publishes it.
PowerOut may process, transform, combine, cache or otherwise present this information differently from the original source in order to provide features such as:
- Interactive maps
- Postcode searches
- Outage history
- Outage statistics
- Charts and summaries
- Notifications
- API or data access services
Where practical, PowerOut will identify the original source associated with outage information.
8. Email Alerts
PowerOut may provide optional email alerts for users who subscribe to a postcode.
Email alerts may be sent when a new outage is detected, when an estimated restoration time changes, when an outage is restored, or when PowerOut determines that a particular postcode is no longer affected by an ongoing outage.
Alert information is based on the outage data available to PowerOut at the time the alert is generated. Because the underlying information may be delayed, incomplete or inaccurate, PowerOut cannot guarantee that every outage will result in an alert or that an alert will always reflect the current situation.
Users can unsubscribe from email alerts using the unsubscribe link provided in alert emails.
9. Third-Party Services
PowerOut relies on third-party services and data sources. These services may change, become unavailable, introduce technical restrictions or change the way information is provided.
PowerOut cannot guarantee continued access to any particular third-party service or data source.
PowerOut may remove or modify a data source where it becomes unavailable, its terms change, or continued use is no longer practical.
10. Website Availability
PowerOut is provided on an "as available" basis.
Reasonable efforts are made to keep the website operational and to collect outage information regularly. However, no guarantee is made that the website or its data will always be available.
Service interruptions may occur because of maintenance, technical failures, network problems, third-party failures or other circumstances outside the control of PowerOut.
11. External Websites
PowerOut may provide links to external websites, including electricity network operators and other third-party services.
PowerOut does not control those websites and is not responsible for their availability, content, accuracy or privacy practices.
12. Intellectual Property
PowerOut does not claim ownership of information that originates from third-party data providers.
Third-party names, trademarks, logos and other intellectual property remain the property of their respective owners.
Where applicable, PowerOut will provide attribution or links to the original source.
13. User Responsibility
By using PowerOut, you acknowledge that outage information displayed by the service may not be complete, accurate or current.
You are responsible for verifying important information with the appropriate official source before relying upon it.
14. Privacy
PowerOut may collect limited information about visitors and users of the service.
Depending on the features provided, this may include information such as technical information about your device, IP address, website usage information, searches and information voluntarily provided by you.
Where PowerOut collects personal information, details about what information is collected, why it is collected, how it is used and how long it is retained will be provided in the Privacy Policy.
The Privacy Policy should be reviewed before providing personal information to PowerOut.
15. Cookies
PowerOut may use cookies or similar technologies where necessary for the operation of the website.
If non-essential cookies or analytics technologies are introduced, appropriate information and consent mechanisms will be provided where required.
16. Changes to PowerOut
PowerOut is an evolving project. Features, data sources, collection methods and the way information is presented may change from time to time.
These terms and the information contained on this page may also be updated as the service develops.
17. Contact
